“Uncle” – Telling Him Was the Hardest

Jun 10, 2022

When you’re going through a difficult time in your life, finding people who lift you up and support you in the good and the bad times is a blessing. Being able to rely on those few people in your life makes some of those hard moments in life easier to bear.

And then some people in life make a huge impact on who you are as a person. One of the people who have supported me throughout my entire life is my uncle, Reynaldo. He is truly a gem of a man. Telling him that I had been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer was a difficult day. There is something special about the people in your life who truly care about you and want to know and be involved in every single aspect of your life. My uncle is one of these people in my life.

Reynaldo has always been there for me as I’ve grown into the woman I am today. He had a hand in my rearing. His presence in my life has helped shape and mold me into the strong, independent, funny, and intelligent woman I am today. I was his protégé in parenting. He has done everything for me, including combing and brushing my hair into two puff balls as a kid. He has played a huge role in my childhood, taking my family and me on trips and coming to Texas for every achievement I have ever accomplished.

Reynaldo’s strength has always been “getting into our business.” Even though he lives far away, he makes an effort to ask the 1000 questions and won’t let up until he gets an answer.

He is the coolest uncle. He is interested in every single aspect of my life, but he also treats my siblings and me like the ladies that we are. There aren’t many uncles who would make an effort to take his nieces out to dinner, pay for everything, and make sure that we have the best time while we’re out with him. He often treats us to a night out on the town and joins in on the fun that we’re having.

When I found out that I had rare blood cancer, I called the man who’s been there for me from the beginning of my life and told him the news. It was one of the most difficult moments of this experience. Reynaldo was the man in my life that stepped up, even more after my father passed away.

He is a person in my life that have been important in lifting me up throughout my cancer journey. I’m more grateful for him than I could say.
